3. Binti has always been interested in geography. Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environment. She is a voracious reader. Recently she read that the surface of the earth varies meters in elevation. She found the following information. There are 14 mountains over 8,000 metres (26,247 ft) and are often referred to as the Eight thousanders. All are located in the two highest mountain ranges in the world, the Himalayas and the Karakoram. (a) At 8848 metres in elevation, Mt. Everest in Tibet/Nepal is the highest mountain in the world. The next highest mountain is K2 in Pakistan/China at 8611 metres. How much taller is Mt. Everest than Mt. K2? How much is the total height of both the mountains? (b) Mt.Pico of the Azores islands is the world’s tallest underwater mountain. It rises 6096 metres from the ocean floor to the surface. It rises another 2350 metres above the ocean surface. Mt. Mckinley is the highest mountain in North America with an elevation of 6194 metres. How much is the height of Mt. Pico and also find out how much taller is Mt. Pico than Mt. Mckinley?
