Let the unknown number be x.

$\frac{3}{4} - x = \frac{3}{8}$

$- x = \frac{3}{8} - \frac{3}{4}$

$- x = \frac{3 - 6}{8}$

$- x = \frac{ - 3}{8}$

$x = \frac{3}{8}$
