Answer:

The value of x is 3 and that of y is -3.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given equations are:

5x + 2y = 9     --(i)

4x  -   y = 15    --(ii)

We will multiply equation (ii) by 2 so that the coefficients of y becomes same in both the equations.

=> 5x + 2y = 9

=> 8x - 2y = 30

Now we can cancel the term containing y.

This will be done by adding the equations.

=> 5x + 8x = 9 + 30

=> 13x = 39

=> x =3

Now substituting the value of x in equation (ii)

=> 4*3 -y = 15

=> 12 - y = 15

=> -y = 15 - 12

=> -y = 3

=> y = -3

Therefore, the value of x is 3 and that of y is -3.
