Explanation:

Direct speech refers to first person narration. It takes the tense of the actual speech when it was spoken. The original sentence spoken is within quotation marks. Indirect speech on the other hand is in the third person. It follows the tense of the reporting verb. For its punctuation it can only use a full stop. To relate the punctuation mark it can be narrated through the reporting verb.

So in the second question the sign of interrogation has been replaced by the verb 'asked'.
