The Pala period was a period of excellence in architecture and sculpture. The stupas at Naianda display how the Gupta style continued to exist as a model in arc Mtecture during the Palas. But in sculpture there was a transformation of the Gupta style of art. Two Pala period figures of Padmapcand Avalokiteshvara found in Bihar illustrate the transformation.
In the post-Gupta period Bengal became the principal centre of cultural activities in northern India. During the rule of the Palas the Buddhist monasteries became the main centres of learning of all the Buddhist monasteries the most important were Odantapura and Vikramsila, both situated in present Bihar.
In these centers of learning, apart from Buddhist scriptures, literature and various other forms of knowledge were taught. Santideva, Sil Rakshit, Jetari and Pundit Dharmapala were some of the renowned Buddhist scholars of the period.
