By election happens after some seat fall vacant due to death of or resignation of elected member byelection happens just for that particular vacant seat. New elected member then occupies the seat for remaining period of the term. By definition general election is the rule and by election should be theexception .

General elections are those elections which are held after a regular interval of time or time-period. That is in our country the interval for every election is of 5 years. That means after every five years general election will take place they can be held for C.M. , president, prime minister, pradhan , etc..

while in case of by elections

Those elections which are held in between the time period of 5 years due to death of position holder or resigning of a position holder due to any reason are called as by elections or mid-term elections .
