solute = a substance which is present in the dissolved or dispersed state in a binary solution ,it is present in lesser quantity 

solvent= component of the solution in which other substances dissolve, it is present in large quantity 


a solute can be gas /liquid/solid 


a solvent can also be either of the three

a solute eg = 
alloys

a solvent eg = water
