Answer:

Under British rule, the functions and powers of the tribal chiefs changed considerably. They were allowed to keep their land titles over a cluster of villages and rent out lands. ... They also had to pay tribute to the British, and discipline the tribal groups on behalf of the British.

During British rule the tribal chiefs were very badly losted their importance among their people. Before the britishers arrived the tribal cheifs were enjoying certain things like peole gave them gifts, whatever they say the peole accept them, they have the rights over the lands, etc.but when when the britishers came they lost their rights over the their people. In fact now they have to stay under the britishers domination.
