Steps of construction:

  1. Open up the compass to a length of 2.5 cm (Diameter = 5 cm,⇒ r= 2.5 cm ) and draw a circle with centre O.
  2. Take a point P outside the circle such that OP= 5cm
  3. Join OP.
  4. Draw the perpendicular bisector of OP.
  5. Mark the mid- point as M.
  6. Open up the compass of length OM and draw a circle to intersect the previous circle at A and B respectively.
  7. Join PA and PB.
  8. PA and PB are the required tangents.
