Three examples of biological processes which involves the expenditure of energy are give below:

Answer:

1. Active transport of substances

In the active transport of substances such as glucose, ions, amino acids there occurs expenditure of ATP.

In active transport, expenditure of ATP occurs because in this transport the substances are transported from low concentration region to higher concentration.

Therefore, the substances moves against the concentration gradient direction and hence requires energy in the form of ATP.

2. Glycolysis

Glycolysis can be defined as the process in which there occurs break down of glucose into two pyruvate molecules, NADH, ATP and H2O

In this process, two ATP molecules are used up or utilized. The first ATP is used up when there occurs formation of glucose-6-phosphate from glucose.

The second ATP is used up in the step when fructose-1,6-bisphosphate is formed from fructose-6-phosphate.

3. Muscle contraction

During muscle contraction, ATP is used. Even in the relaxation of muscles, ATP is utilised.

For example: during contraction, formation of cross bridge between myosin and actin filament is formed by hydrolysis of ATP.
