Concept :

A branch of history known as social history, often referred to as the new social history, examines the past as it was experienced by its inhabitants. It still has a strong presence in history departments in Britain, Canada, France, Germany, and the United States. During its "golden period," it was a significant growing field among researchers in the 1960s and 1970s. The percentage of American university history teachers who identify with social history increased from 31 to 41 percent between 1975 and 1995, while the percentage of political historians decreased from 40 to 30 percent. Of the 3410 faculty members who responded to the survey at the history departments of British and Irish institutions in 2014, 878 (or 26 percent) said they were interested in social history, and 841 (or 84%), in political history (25 percent).
