3 friends had lunch in a restaurant. The lunch cost $25.

Each of them took $10 out of their wallets, so they got $30. The waiter took $30 and brought back the change - $5. The friends decided

to leave a $2 tip, and divided the remaining $3 equally ($1 each). They began to calculate:each person spent $9 on lunch.

But if 3 x 9 = 27, plus a $2 tip, you get $29. Where is the $1?

Given : 3 friends had lunch in a restaurant. The lunch cost $25.

Each of them took $10 out of their wallets, so they got $30.

The waiter took $30 and brought back the change - $5.

The friends decided to leave a $2 tip, and divided the remaining $3 equally ($1 each). They began to calculate each person spent $9 on lunch.

But if 3 x 9 = 27, plus a $2 tip, you get $29.

To Find : Where is the $1?

Solution:

Total Paid =  30

Owner Returned $ 5

Net Paid = 30 - 5 = $ 25

Each Person get $ 1 back

Hence paid = $ 9 each

Total Paid by 3 = 3 * 9 = 27 $

Actually net paid = $ 25

27 - 25 = $ 2  is the difference ( Tip Given to Waiter )

there is no meaning of adding 27 & 2 and compare with 30

its actually

27 - 2 = 30 - 5

=> 25 = 25

so nothing  ( $1 ) has gone anywhere
