It serves as a channel for the transport of materials synthesised by RER and SER within and out of the cell.It forms a cytoplasmic frameworkfor some of the biochemical activities. It helps in membrane biogenesis.(proteins made by RER and fats bySER helps in the formation of cell membrane at times this is membrane biogenesis.)

ER is an organelle found in organisms
they are mainly of 2 types :-
Rough endoplasmic reticulum ( RER )
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum ( SER )
Rough endoplasmic reticulum helps in Production, binding, folding and selecting  of quality proteins etc..

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum helps in manufacture of fat , hormones and also in detoxification
