A block of wood is kept on a table top. The
mass of a wooden block is 5 kg and its
dimensions are 40 cm x 20 cm x 10 cm
Find the pressure exerted by the wooden block
on the table top if it is made to lie on the table
top with its sides of dimensions
20 cm x 10 cm (Take g = 10 m/s?)
(a) 1000 N/m2
(b) 1500 N/m
(c) 2000 N/m (d) 2500 N/m

Mass of wood= 5 kg

Thrust due to wooden block,

Mg=5 kg× {9.8ms}^{ - 2} =49N

(a) Surface area of 20 cm×10 cm

Surface,

A=(20×10) cm²

=(0.2×0.1)m²

=0.02m²

P =  \frac{mg}{A}

P =  \frac{49N}{ {0.02m}^{2}}  =  \frac{49}{0.02} N {m}^{2}

(b) Surface area of 40 cm×20 cm

Surface,

A=(40×20) cm

A=(0.4×0.2)m²=0.08m²

P =  \frac{49N}{0.08 {m}^{2}  }  =  \frac{49}{0.08} N {m}^{ - 2}

or  \:  \: pressure, \:  P= 612.5 N {m}^{ - 2}
