When liquid ammonia vaporizes it absorbs heat from the surrounding. It is highly volatile. It easily liquifies under a pressure at room temperature. Hence liquid ammonia is used as a refrigerant in ice plants.

Evaporation of a liquid needs heat energy. When liquid ammonia vaporizes, it absorbs large quantities of heat without changing its temperature.
