Answer:

a. For example, the symbol for the element mercury, Hg, comes from the Latin word hydrargyrum, meaning "liquid silver," a more recent version of which was the English "quicksilver." Many other elements that were known to the ancients also have names derived from Latin.

b. An atom or group of atoms of the same or of different elements that behave as a single unit with a positive or negative charge is known as radical.

c. A chemical formula is a way of information about the chemical proportions of atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound or molecule, using chemical element symbols, numbers, and it is symbolic representation of one molecule of a compound.

d. A chemical equation is the symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in the form of symbols and formulae, wherein the reactant entities are given on the left-hand side and the product entities on the right-hand side.

e. Atomic mass is defined as the number of protons and neutrons in an atom, where each proton and neutron has a mass of approximately 1 amu (1.0073 and 1.0087, respectively). The electrons within an atom are so miniscule compared to protons and neutrons that their mass is negligible.

f. The substance (or substances) initially involved in a chemical reaction are called reactants or reagents. Chemical reactions are usually characterized by a chemical change, and they yield one or more products, which usually have properties different from the reactants.

g. A chemical reaction is the process in which atoms present in the starting substances rearrange to give new chemical combinations present in the substances formed by the reaction. These starting substances of a chemical reaction are called the reactants, and the new substances that result are called the products.

h. The combining capacity of an element is known as its valency. Valency is the number of valence electrons in outer shell that take part in the chemical reaction.

i. Chemical equation can be divided into two types: balanced chemical equation and unbalanced chemical equation. If the number of atoms of each element in reactants is not equal to the number of atoms of each element present in product, then the chemical equation is called unbalanced chemical equation.

j. An element which exhibits more than one valency is said to exhibit variable valency.
