Nature fascinates me and so does the banyan tree an integral part of nature with so many lessons to learn from it .If you have ever noticed a banyan tree closely it is intriguing indeed .
The Banyan tree is the national tree of India and because of its huge structure, many long and deep roots and branches it symbolizes the country's UNITY .It's tangles of branches, ariel roots and trunks may spread across several acres An old banyan tree can reach more than 656 feet in diameter and can be as tall as 98 feet The widest tree in the world - the Great Banyan - is located in Kolkata and is about 250 years old. The tree grows by placing its branches down.Its seeds germinate in cracks and crevices of the host tree, sending branches everywhere around it, called aerial prop roots.
So we can say it is the perfect symbol for ancient Indian families which also grew like the banyan trees,where the children stayed with the parents, married and brought their spouses home to have children who grew up and married and added to the family "compound ".This however is very rarely seen now with children these days preferring to live as nuclear family units .
A Banyan tree like other trees too starts out from a seed…and grows into a giant tree teaching us that we can also grow similarly…little by little…growing tiny ‘roots’ here and there which could be the love and support of the relationships we nurture over time. It continually shoots out new roots into the ground, seeking growth… we can also try to grow like the ‘roots’, forever progressing but still remaining rooted to a spot giving sustenance to those below us and helping them also to grow along, a symbiotic relationship of nurture and caring. It's humility is seen by its virtue to protects all creatures who come under its shade
It's huge size protects from the hot sun ,hence it is often planted near homes, temples, villages and roadsides. It has medicinal and commercial value as well
The Banyan tree is considered SACRED . Lord Shiva is sometimes depicted sitting in silence, under the banyan tree, with the saints sitting at His feet. The narration of Krishna sucking his toe, lying on a banyan leaf is recounted in the Markandeya Purana .The tree is a veritable symbol of calm and wisdom as it was under this tree that Buddha is said to have meditated and got enlightened .

'KALPAVIRISHKA ' which means 'a divine tree that fulfills wishes'.Married Hindu women worship the banyan tree to lead a long and happy married life.
