Answer:

The distance from any water body (whether it is a lake/ sea) have a major impact on climate of any location. Greater distant locations have lesser impact of sea in controllig the climatic conditions.

Say Mumbai or any coastal region like Goa , they are situated near huge water reservoirs which causes lesser daily temperature range, as water moderates diurnal temperature swings and overall annual as well(because water bodies take much time to warm and cool).

While if you see temperature range (whether daily or annual) of any desert region; say Jaisalmer of Rajasthan, such places have great temperature ranges causing hot day and chilling night (as land warms and cools quickly)

That’s why coastal cities have cold summer and mild winters and desert cities (far from water reservoirs) have hot summers and chilling winters.

How does distance from the sea (continentality) affect the climate?

Oceans and seas are large bodies of water which act as climate moderators in coastal areas. Since water heats up slowly than land during day and also cools down slowly at night, it creates pressure gradient. Because of difference in atmospheric pressure (resulted from difference in temperature), sea and land breezes start blowing which moderate the temperature.

Therefore because of this moderating effect of water, climate is more moderate in mild in coastal areas and as you move away from coasts; diurnal as well as annual temperature range increases. That is the reason why Delhi has extreme climate whereas Mumbai experiences a moderate climate.

Impact of ocean currents (both hot and cold), also affect the coastal regions near which these currents move.

Distance from the sea (Continentality)

The sea affects the climate of a place. Coastal areas are cooler and wetter than inland areas. Clouds form when warm air from inland areas meets cool air from the sea. The centre of continents are subject to a large range of temperatures. In the summer, temperatures can be very hot and dry as moisture from the sea evaporates before it reaches the centre of the land mass.

Direction of prevailing winds

Winds that blow from the sea often bring rain to the coast and dry weather to inland areas.

Specific heat of water is higher than land. This means that it is difficult to heat the water and once heated, it is equally difficult the cool water. So water and nearby landmass always have a temperature difference. This temperature difference causes a pressure difference and hence a flow of wind from land to sea and vice versa is more prominent in areas which are closer to large water bodies. Hence such areas do not face extreme climate .

In southern hemisphere, where the ocean proportion is more, the westerlies find less barriers and their speed attain very high magnitude.
