Rectrices

Rectrices: the flight feathers of the tail. Most bird species have 10-12 rectrices. The feathers are attached to the wing all along its length, and there is no skin or muscle underneath the wing to support them. The feathers are what gives the wings enough surface area to generate lift and to glide. Without the feathers, the bird is no more able to fly than you are if you try flapping your arms.
