Answers
Explanation:
The students belonging to preparatory classes, 6 to 8 years old are the ones who are in the learning stage of the basics of language, and they need more knowledge about language and science subjects. The cirricular needs would be to strenghthen their grip on language, by arousing their interest in book reading, giving them some idea about debates and speech. Also in parallel, students should be taught about basics of science and also show the existence of science in through some easy activities
Children coming to the Anganwadi will not be from very rich families. This background will greatly affect the teaching methods. The following can be done:
1. Gradual shift from non-verbal to verbal activities - Since the children will most likely not have much exposure, it is extremely important to establish a comfort zone in the classroom. Children respond better to non-verbal cues. So, the teacher should start with non-verbal activities and then gradually move towards verbal activities.
2. Use easily observable/accessible everyday examples- Using examples that one can find in daily life help children understand better. Since these are common- place examples and situations children will already have experienced them. This experience can be used as a basis to build on, effectively connecting academics and daily life as well as school and home.
3. Assign group work- This will teach children to work in teams, build interpersonal communication skills and also develop a sense of belonging towards the Anganwadi.
4. Give assignments that are meant for the child alone- There is no guarantee that the children are coming from educated families. So handing out assignments that are difficult for the child to complete will only lead to frustration build-up in the child and the parents. It will also develop their problem solving skills if the assignments are of the learner’s level.
5. Promote interactive learning- Capitalise on children's love for technology to capture their attention. Diagrams, slides, graphics and animation can be shown on smart boards or other devices.
6. Dedicate time for clarifications and recap- Dedicate at least five minutes per class to solve doubts and answer questions that the children might have. This time can also be utilised to do a quick recap of whatever was covered in class.
