In redox reaction oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously.

The examples are

  • Image(i)

The Copper(II) oxide is losing oxygen and being reduced. Whereas, oxygen is added to hydrogen and is being oxidized.

  • Image(ii)

In this reaction, HCl is oxidized to Cl₂ whereas, MnO₂ is reduced to MnCl₂

Oxidation reaction:

The process where oxygen is added or hydrogen is removed from a substance. Or

The process in which a substance loses an electron/electrons.

Examples

\boxed{\rm{2Cu+O_{2} \longrightarrow 2CuO}}

By giving heat.

Cu = Copper

O₂ = Oxygen

CuO = Copper Oxide

  • Another example

\boxed{\rm{2H_{2}S+O_{2} \longrightarrow 2S + 2H_{2}O}}

Here,

H₂S = Hydrogen Sulphide

O₂ = Oxygen

S = Sulphur

H₂O = Hydrogen Oxide

  • Also,

\boxed{Zn \longrightarrow Zn^{2+} + 2e^{-}}

Zn = Zinc

Now,

Reduction reaction:

The process in which oxygen is removed or hydrogen is added to a substance. OR

The process in which a substance gains an electron/electrons.

Examples

\boxed{2Na+H_{2} \longrightarrow 2NaH}

Here,

Na = Sodium

H₂ = Hydrogen

NaH = Sodium Hydride

  • Also,

\boxed{Zn^{2+}+2e^{-}\longrightarrow Zn}

Zn = Zinc
