1 Why did the farman of Aurangzeb seem beneficial to the British East India Company?

Answer :

By 1696, the Company gained zamindari rights for 3 villages in Bengal. Aurangazeb’s farman allowed the Company to trade duty free. This allowed the company to trade without paying taxes which saved the company tons of money.

However, this power was also misused. Company officials used this power to carry private trade duty free.

2 What were the various reasons behind conflict between Sirajudauallah and EIC previous the battle of plassey.

Answer : The following are the reasons behind conflict between the EIC an Sirajudullah. The Company refused to pay taxes. Holding reference to the Farman of Aurangzeb, one of the previous rulers of Bengal. The Company continued fortification even after the Nawab of Bengal warned them not to. The Company tried to interfere in the political matters of Bengal. EIC even tried to replace Sirajudullah.

3 In what way did the Diwani Rights of Bengal turn out to be a boon for the British EIC in India?

Answer : After the death of Mir Jafar, in 1765, the then Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II granted the Diwani rights of the provinces of Bengal to the Company. This was a major breakthrough for the Company because Diwani allowed it to use the vast revenue resources of Bengal. From the early eighteenth century, the Company had bought most of the goods in India by paying in gold and silver which were imported from Britain. This was putting a huge drain on the treasury in Britain. After the Battle of Plassey, the outflow of gold from Britain slowed down. This outflow completely stopped after the Company got the Diwani of Bengal.

4 How did the Subsidiary Alliance help the British EIC further annex territories in India.

Answer : According to the subsidiary alliance the rulers had to ask for the permission of the British before making any big political decision concerning another kingdom. For example going to war or forming an alliance. The king wasn’t allowed to keep an army or employ another European in their service. Also a British Resident was stationed in the Indian court. Meaning the British indirectly controlled the territory. As more and more kingdoms and princely states signed the Subsidiary Alliance the British gained more powers.

5 Why do you think that the kingdom of Tipu Sultan was a barrier for the expansionist policy of the British EIC in India?

Answer : In 1785, Tipu Sultan stopped the export of sandalwood, pepper and cardamom through the ports of his kingdom, and disallowed local merchants from trading with the Company. He also established relationships with the French in India and modernised his army. The British saw Tipu Sultan’s kingdom as an obstacle in their development as he was against them and did everything to stop them.

6 Why did Governor General Lord Hastings enforce the claim to paramountcy in India?

Answer: Lord Hastings enforced the claim to paramountcy because of the Company’s expansion efforts. The British claimed that their governance was supreme, hence their power was greater. He used this claim to annex Awadh.
