because, on repulsion of a stone assumed to be magnet indicates the property of the magnet that is, like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other, since no other metal or a stone is likely to repel, it is a sure test for magnetism and make sure that they also attract each other by inverting the position of one magnet
