3. Line m || n cut by transversals t and s. If m<2 = 100 degrees, m<13 = 135 degrees, and m<9 = 2x-5, find the value of x and the measure of angle y. Show your work and explain your reasoning using parallel line postulates or theorems.

Answer:

m<12=m<13 ( corresponding angles)

Similarly, m<6=m<2

m<9=180-m<12=180-135=45

Also,given m<9=2x+5. Therefore,

  • 2x-5=45
  • 2x=50
  • x=25

m<8=m<6=100 (vertically opposite angles)

Now y+m<9+m<8=180 ( sum of angles of a triangle)

  • y+45+100=180
  • y+145=180
  • y=35

Answer: x=25;y=35
