The most important state initiative to compensate past discrimination and uplift the status of weaker section is reservation.

It included reserving certain seats 'quota' for for members of Weaker Sections (Schedule Caste and Scheduled Tribes and in some cases even Other Backward Classes) in public sphere.

seats reserved for backward groups in public sector jobs, educational institutions and in the legislature (Loksabha, Rajya Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies)

The proportion of reserve seats is equal to the percentage share of scheduled castes and tribes in the total population but for the other backward classes the proportion is decided differently.

The same principle is extended to other developmental programs of government, some of which are exclusively for scheduled castes or tribes while other give preference to other backward classes.
