Mahavir swami told Jain monks and nuns to observe ahimsa which is non-violence, Satya that is truth, asteya means non-stealing, brahmacharya means chastity, and aparigraha which is non-attachment necessary for moral freedom.

  • As per Jain cosmology, 24 Tirthankaras have arisen on earth and they believe that Mahavira is the last Tirthankara of Avasarpiṇī in the present time cycle.
  • A Tirthankara who is the ford-maker, saviour or spiritual teacher implies the forming of a tirtha, a path across the sea of birth-and-death progressions.
  • Jain monks known as sadhus and nuns known as sadhvis are also called munis which are precisely the "silent" holy ones.
  • Traditionally, they are presumed to shift from village to village, acknowledging only what food somebody gives them along the path.
