Nutrition is necessary for organisms:

Nutrition is necessary for organisms to maintain a balance of nutrients in their body, to maintain homeostasis and to carry out normal processes. Nutrients in the body are source of vitamins, minerals, several ions that are required for cellular processes, for signal transduction and cell-cell communication.

The absence of nutrients causes several diseases in humans like scurvy, beri beri, rickets, pellagra, hypocalcemia, brittle teeth and fragile nails. Nutrients are equally important in plants and animals, as it is important in humans.
