3 pipes X Y Z are fitted to a tank. For any pipe, the rate of filling is the same as the rate of emptying. The rates of filling are in the ratio 2:3:4. X alone can fill the tank in 5 hours.find the time taken in hours, to fill the tank if X is used as an emptying pipe while the others are used as filling pipes.

Answer:

2hours

Step-by-step explanation:

rate of filling by X,Y,Z are in ratio 2:3:4

let n be the proportion,

=> rate of X = 2n litres/hour

rate of Y = 3n litres/hour

and rate of Z = 4n litres/hour

given that time taken by X alone to fill the tank = 5 hours

=> capacity of the tank = 2n*5 =10n litres

now efficiency of 3 pipes such that X is draining and others filling will be,

-2n+3n+4n =5n litres/hour

so time taken to fill the tank = 10n litres  / 5n litres/hour

= 2 hours
