The Surat session of the Congress in 1907 is significant because it led to the split of the Congress between the moderates and the extremists. The moderates were led by Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Pherozeshah Mehta and Surendranath Banerjee while the extremists were led by Lokmanya Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai and Sri Aurobindo.
