Consumption of Onion  = y kg

Expenditure = xy Rs

The cost of onion has increased by 20%

New cost = x + (20/100)x = 1.2x

Expenditure = xy  Rs

New Consumption = xy/1.2x  = y/1.2 kg

Reduction in Consumption = y - y/1.2  = 0.2y/1.2  = y/6

Percentage reduction = (y/6y) * 100 = 16.67 % ≈ 17 %
