Given :-

  • Object distance (u) = - 16cm
  • Image distance (v) = ± 24cm

To find :-

  • Possible focal lengths

Solution :-

According to the Mirror Formula

  • If v = + 24cm

→ 1/v + 1/u = 1/f

→ 1/24 + (-1)/16 = 1/f

→ 2 - 3/48 = 1/f

→ -1/48 = 1/f

→ f = - 48cm

  • If v = - 24cm

→ 1/v + 1/u = 1/f

→ -1/24 + (-1)/16 = 1/f

→ 1/f = -2-3/48

→ 1/f = -5/48

→ f = -48/5

→ f = - 9.6cm

Hence,

  • Possible focal lengths are - 48cm and - 9.6cm
