The mass of part of the string below A is m.

we have to find the tension of the string at the lower end and at A.

see diagram,

Let us consider that tension of the string at lower end is T'

at equilibrium,

T' = weight of block of mass M

= Mg

hence, tension of the string at lower end is Mg

Let us consider that tension of the string at A is T.

at equilibrium,

T = weight of block of mass M + weight of string below A.

= Mg + mg

= (M + m)g

hence, tension of the string at A is (M + m)g
