When the younger brother was running with his friends behind a kite his elder brother stopped him and lectured him saying that he was not in a junior class anymore and should start studying and explained to him that he was smart but there was no use of it if it did not destroy his self respect about the fact that now he was only one grade behind his brother and so made that comment.

This line means that experience matters more than knowledge .This line applied to the brother’s parents as they also had not studied long enough but had more experience which is what mattered.
