Answer:

Shepherd 1 had 3 loaves.

He ate 8/3 loaves. So, he gave away 3 - (8/3) = (1/3) of a loaf.

Shepherd 2 had 5 loaves.

He ate 8/3 loaves. So, he gave away 5 - (8/3) = (7/3) loaves.

So, out of the 8/3 loaves eaten by the hunter, 1/3 came from Shepherd 1 and 7/3 came from Shepherd 2.

So, the compensation should be divided in the ratio (1/3):(7/3) = 1:7.

So, Shepherd 1 takes 1 coin and Shepherd 2 takes 7 coins.

3 loaves + 5 loaves = 8 loaves

Let us cut each loaf into 3 pieces. We get 24 pieces. So each one gets 8 pieces each.

The first shepherd keeps eight pieces and gives one piece to the hunter.

The second shepherd keeps eight pieces and gives seven pieces to the hunter.

So the first shepherd should take one coin and the second shepherd should take seven coins.

The total number of loaves of bread = 3+5 = 8.

Each of the 3 had 8/3 loaves.

The hunter had 8/3 loaves that gave the 2 shepherd contributed 2*8/3 or 16/3.

Of the 16/3 Shepherd 1 gave 3/8 of the lot while Shepherd 2 gave 5/8.

Shepherd 1 gets (16/3)(3/8)*8 = 3x

Shepherd 2 gets (16/3)(5/8)*8 = 5x

Now 3x+5x = 8x = 8 coins

So Shepherd 1 gets 3 coins and Shepherd 2 gets 5
