No burning of waste will prove extremely harmful to society. The waste may throw harmful smoke which may affect our health. But on the other hand, it may benefit our society with the electrical energy which may be extracted by burning waste materials.

  • Burning plastic waste to make electricity sounds sensible: Plastic is, after all, formed from hydrocarbons, exactly like oil, and is more energy-dense than coal. But various impediments loom to a major development of waste-burning.
  • For one thing, placing waste-to-energy facilities, like siting landfills, is difficult: No one wants to live near a factory that may host hundreds of trash-filled trucks a day. Usually, the plants wind up near low-income populations. The U.S. has seen only one new incinerator since 1997.
  • Waste-to-energy facilities are extremely expensive to create and maintain, therefore they often charge more to tip loads of rubbish than landfills do. And because plants work most efficiently with regular supplies of garbage, their owners sometimes need to import stuff from far, far away.
  • Large plants do generate enough power to supply tens of thousands of dwellings. But studies have shown that recycling plastic garbage saves more energy—by lowering the need to extract fossil fuel and turn it into new plastic—than burning it, combined with other household waste, can create.
