Social identification is important because it influences how people see themselves and how they interact with others. If people have a positive view of their identity within a group, they are more likely to relate well to others in that group and feel positive emotions about themselves.

• Race/ethnicity, gender, social class/socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, (dis)abilities, and religion/religious beliefs are a few examples of social identities.
• People's emotional investments in their group affiliations lead to a relationship between their self-esteem and the social standing of their in-groups. Therefore, a positive social identity is the outcome of a positive assessment of one's in-group in relation to pertinent out-groups.
• Our self-perceptions are influenced both positively and negatively by our parents and peers. Positive self-perceptions can result from the feedback we receive from significant persons, which includes close family members. In essence, people adapt their conduct to fit the current social circumstances. We will imitate other people's behaviour when we are in a novel circumstance or unclear of how to act. Social psychology is a discipline.
• Our culture affects how we live, work, and play as well as how we see ourselves and other people. Our moral standards—what we deem acceptable and wrong—are impacted. This is how the society in which we live affects the decisions we make. But our decisions can also have an impact on other people and ultimately alter our society.
• People can join groups and have a sense of belonging in their social environment by using their social identity. These identities are crucial in determining one's self-image. The more closely people connect with a group, the more that group influences how individuals feel about themselves.
