the monkey used to to divide the bread into two parts which were unequal..and to make the pieces equal he used to cut a a small piece from the bread and ate them.

no the cat's didn't get equal shares of the bread because in foolishness, they let the monkey to decide, but the monkey was cunning and greedy so thats why he ate the whole bread.
