(a) Atomic number : The number of protons present in the nucleus of an atom of an element is called atomic number and denoted by Z.

(b) Mass number: The total number of protons and neutrons that is total number of nucleons present in the nucleus of an atom is called atomic mass number and denoted by A.

Mass number (A) = Number of protons (Z) + Number of neutrons (N)

A = Z + N
