Valency is the combining capacity of an element.Do become stable an element need an octet in the last shell. So, valency is important.

The valency of an element is the no. of electrons it loses or gains while forming a compound. elements that lose electrons are said to have a positive valency, while elements that gain electrons are said to have a negative valency. e.g, valency of sodium is +1 and chlorine is -1.
