Brahmo Samaj started as a movement wherein Bengalis conducted meetings in Calcutta in 1828. Ram Mohan Roy and Debendranath Tagore were some of the leading members of Brahmo Samaj.
Principles of Brahmo Samaj
- The aim of this group is to worship the eternal God.
- It is against the principles of priesthood, rituals and sacrifices. It rather advocates praying and meditating.
- The group criticised the prevailing caste system at that time and rejected the doctrine of Karta.
- The group didn't believe in any divine avatar of god and held that scriptures could not be termed to be having absolute authority over human conciseness.
- The group advocated and encouraged belief in Hinduism.
