The causes of French Revolution are;-
- Social Causes: The society was divided into three estates. There were several inequalities. The clergy and noblemen were exempted from paying taxes to the state, so they became richer and the peasants poorer. Only the third estate paid taxes. The middle class suffered humiliation too. The gap between the rich and the poor widened.
- Economic Causes: Maintaining an extravagant court at the immense palace at Varsailles became a burden to the king. France helped 13 colonies of America to gain independence from the common enemy, Britain. The war added a debt of more than a billion livres, on which the French government had to pay a huge interest. Continuous wars led to a broken economy. The peasants were burdened with taxes.
- Subsistence Crisis: Drought and hail reduced the harvest, which led to the subsistence crisis. This caused rise in the prices of the bread.
- Immediate Causes: Emperor Louis XVI was compelled to call a mutiny of the Estates General in 1789 after a lapse of 175 years. This generated much excitement amongst the third estate, for they thought they could put forward their problems. The first an the second estate sat in rows facing each other on two sides, while the third estate to stand at the back. Voting in the Estates General in the past had been conducted according t the principle that each estate had one vote. But the members of the third estate demanded that the voting now be conducted by the assembly as a whole, where each member would have an individual vote. When the King refused this proposal, angered by his actions, the representatives stormed off the meeting place and gathered at an indoor tennis court, and swore not to disperse until they drafted a new constitution for France. Thus, the National Assembly was formed.
- Philosophical writings regarding democratic principles played an important role and inspired the people leading to a revolution.
