Missouri saved the French wine industry from collapse in the 1870s. It was called the Great French Blight. Frenbch vineyards were dying and people feared that the entire European wine industry would be destroyed.

George Hussmann (MU College vintner) and Charles V. Riley (Missouri's first entomologist) were among the scientists called in from around the world to help investigate the problem. They discovered a phylloxera infestation (a small American plant louse spread by aphids). Riley knew that once the insects took hold of the plants, they would be impossible to eradicate. However, some American rootstocks were immune to the louse. So they proposed grafting French vines onto American rootstocks. In this way, it was possible to produce healthy grapes. Ten million rootstocks were collected from Hermann, Neosho, and Sedalia and shipped to France.
