bahadur shah zafar, the last of the mughal king, was asked to take the leadership as due to inefficient resources the mutiny was lacking co ordination.
he was supposed to bring all the revoltees under one norm, which was against the british.
small time rulers, chieftains and princes supported the sepoys since they were sympathetic towards them, and some were themselves exploited by ctuel british policies. the doctrine of lapse and the policy made by wellesley, the subsudiary system, proved to be the main motivating brainchild of them, besides the pork-and-beef issue in enfield rifle.
