Head has a deeply notched upper jaw with 2 cusps. The leatherback is the only sea turtle that lacks a hard shell. Its carapace is large, elongated and flexible with 7 distinct ridges running the length of the animal.

The Laetherback sea turtle is named after its unique shell which has a 'leather-like' appearance due to its dark, thin, strong and rubbery skin dotted with white or pink spots. It has a single shell that has five ridges and is strengthened with many bone plates.
