When we measure something with an instrument which is not accurate, we take approximately 3 readings and take it's average. Here, all the 3 measurements will not be equal but they would be nearer to the actual value so, we need to take it's average value so that, we may get a value of our measurement which is almost equal to the actual value.
And sometimes, we need to find periodicity or exact interval of time as in case if pendulum, then we have to take 3 to 4 readings. In this case, we don't need to take it's average.
