sodium Na, while that of oxygen is O2???

Answer:

BECAUSE Na exists in monoatomic form i.e single atom whereas oxygen exists in diatomic form i.e two atoms. This happens due to there valency. Na have one electron in outermost shell so it can't make bond with itself and the very imp. reason is Na is metal and metals never reacts with themselves. oxygen have six electrons in outermost shell and two oxygen atoms can mutually share there one electron and can make a covalent bond and hence oxygen exists in diatomic state and it's molecular formula is o2.
