Given that,

Number of red balls are 3

Number of white balls are 5

Number of blue balls are 8.

To find,

The probability that the ball taken out is  (a) a red ball, (b) not a white ball.

Solution,

Total number of balls are 3+5+8 = 16 balls

Probability of an event E is given by :

P(E)=\dfrac{\text{favourable outcomes}}{\text{total no of outcomes}}

(a) For a red ball,

Favourable outcomes = 3

P(R)=\dfrac{3}{16}

(b) For not a white ball,

Favourable outcomes = no of red balls + no of blue

= 3+8

=11

P(NW)=\dfrac{11}{16}

Hence, this is the required solution.
