 x2-12x-10=0 Two solutions were found : x =(12-√184)/2=6-√ 46 = -0.782 x =(12+√184)/2=6+√ 46 = 12.782

Step by step solution :Step  1  :Trying to factor by splitting the middle term

 1.1     Factoring  x2-12x-10

The first term is,  x2  its coefficient is  1 .

The middle term is,  -12x  its coefficient is  -12 .

The last term, "the constant", is  -10

Step-1 : Multiply the coefficient of the first term by the constant   1 • -10 = -10

Step-2 : Find two factors of  -10  whose sum equals the coefficient of the middle term, which is   -12 .

     -10   +   1   =   -9     -5   +   2   =   -3     -2   +   5   =   3     -1   +   10   =   9
