no of students = s
no of apples = 300
so
no of apples per student = 300/s = y
sy = 300 - (i)
case 2
300/(s+10) = y -1
300 = (s+10)(y-1)
300 = sy - s + 10y - 10
300 = 300 - s + 10y - 10 - from eq (i)
s = 10y -10 - (ii)
substituting eq (ii) in (i)
300 = (10y-10)y
300 = 10y² -10y
30 = y² - y
y² - y - 30 = 0
y² - 6y + 5y - 30 = 0
y(y-6) + 5(y-6) = 0
(y+5)(y-6)
y = -5 or + 6
no of student = 300/6 = 50
no of apples = 300
so
no of apples per student = 300/s = y
sy = 300 - (i)
case 2
300/(s+10) = y -1
300 = (s+10)(y-1)
300 = sy - s + 10y - 10
300 = 300 - s + 10y - 10 - from eq (i)
s = 10y -10 - (ii)
substituting eq (ii) in (i)
300 = (10y-10)y
300 = 10y² -10y
30 = y² - y
y² - y - 30 = 0
y² - 6y + 5y - 30 = 0
y(y-6) + 5(y-6) = 0
(y+5)(y-6)
y = -5 or + 6
no of student = 300/6 = 50
