Korean culture includes a wide variety of religious elements that shapes people’s way of thinking and behavior. At the early stage of Korean history, Shamanism was a primitive religion, which penetrated into the daily life of the people through folk beliefs. People believed in the spirit of nature and universe. They also believed that all objects in this world had spirits. This belief can also be found in some groups of Thai people. They also believed in the power of incantation.
Korea’s educational system is noted for its high quality and standards. Illiteracy is practically non-existent. Korean students pursue their academic goals enthusiastically, and diligently shoulder heavy workloads.
As one of the “Four Dragons” of East Asia, South Korea has achieved an incredible record of growth. Three decades ago its GDP per capita was comparable to the poorer countries of Africa and Asia. Today, its GDP per capita is comparable to economies of the European Union. Modern Korea is a nation that has rebuilt itself from the devastation of war and has achieved an economic miracle in just a few decades, serving today as a model for many developing countries. This achievement is even more significant considering the extra burden added by the division of Korean Peninsula into two countries. The Korea of today is a fascinating place whose ancient culture and history blend harmoniously with its modern cities.
What do I like most about Korea? It is very difficult to
answer because I like so many things but if I had to choose only one I would
stay with:
People especially with the new generations and the young people.
When I was filming the documentary, I spent many hours at Hongik University, at
first I did not dare to record them very closely, but they were immediately
willing to be allowed to record despite the shamefulness of the Koreans ... I
was invited to go out with them , To dinner, accompanied me to the door of my
house, gave me chocolates and cookies every two by three. All to make me feel
good about them.
When you are recording people you do not know, it is always a little
uncomfortable, but the truth is that the attitude of the college students made
me feel like one of them, to the point that I ended up leaving the camera to
help them with their jobs. There you have me, at 5 in the morning helping them
to finish their work ^^ When you receive so much your subconscious asks you to
correspond by trying to speak always in your language.
I have always said that people are the ones who make a country and they are the
most important resource. Korea is South Korea because people have done so, it
is true that not all people are so good, but until today young people have
always treated me very well and that is something I will always remember.
Those who are around 50 years old tend to be very different in the deal and
with a lot more conservative values and beliefs, the treatment with them is
very difficult because it is too respectful. We must also understand that the
change in Korean society has been very rapid, that is why both contrast between
the two generations.
As long as the people there do not change I will still like Korea :)
